A better way to do drop shadows in illustrator: First copy image and color black. Then use Blur-Gaussian Blur--then choose about 2.9-5 pixels. It worked better than my drop shadow!

default settings are:
Mode: Multiply
Opacity: 75 %
x: 7px
y: 7px
Blur: 5px
If you want a dark Drop shadow and to
put if pretty much right behind
i usually go with
Mode: Normal
Opacity: 100%
x: 0.5 px
y: 0.5px
Blur: 0px
but remember the
X & Y are the distance the drop shadow will be
from the area and the blur is obvious.

I actually do not use drop shadow in illustrator. It is a unique program to illustrator, they incorporated it from photoshop. I rather duplicate the entire thing I am trying to shadow, then color it black, and then add a gausian blur of about 5. move it to where ever you are trying to make the shadow. that is also the way the program works, but it uses pixels as the gauge. In illustrator, you are talking 300 ppi, so it moves very slight. If you want to set the drop shadow, just open it up and set it. It will never go back to the default once it has been reset on that image. The program saves all settings on a image it is constructing along with the image itself.
