How can you know that Jesus is the Christ? How does your testimony grow? Definitely through prayer but you can not merely ask. Testimonies emerge over time through life experiences. When asked when he first gained his testimony, Elder Bednar responded "over the past 49 years".
Elder Hales taught this pattern:
1. Sincere desire to know through prayer
2. Search the scriptures with prayer
3. Search and ponder gospel principals -- test them.
4. Be humble and receptive (have ears to hear when the Lord placed someone before you)
5. Thru serving in callings
6. Thru decisions of obedience
