Nephi's record is the first we read in the Book of Mormon - but his record is not the oldest. He is the son of Lehi and Sariah, who left Jerusalem after his father, a prophet, was warned by the Lord that the city would be destroyed and that he should take his family and depart into the wilderness. This happened about 600 years (during the reign of King Zedekiah, Judah) before Christ was born.We learn later in scripture (2 Nephi 28-34) that Nephi made this record 30 years later. But he begins this history not as a prophet, but as a son whose father happened to be a prophet. We know at the time they departed into the wilderness he was already large and strong of stature, but that his older brothers were not yet married.
Scriptures that describe Nephi's character:
Honors parents (1 Ne 1:1)
Saw many afflictions (1Ne 1:1)
Saw blessings despite afflictions - POSITIVE (1Ne 1:1)
Understood spiritual things - (1Ne 1:1) - Question: was this due to gift, desire, or both?
