SOURCE: A New Way to Interpret the Iron Rod as the Word of God

Spiritual discovery can come as we revisit familiar concepts with fresh perspectives. For example, many of us are aware of the symbolism of the Tree of Life. From both scripture and song we know that the iron rod is the word of God.
We generally think of the word of God in a very literal way—the scriptures, modern-prophets, revelation, and the like. However, I’ve started to thing of this symbol in a new way. It has deepened my understanding of God’s love and given me fortitude for difficult times.
The Word of God
Think about what it means to give someone your word. My mind immediately goes to trust, honor, and promises kept. When I think of holding to the iron rod, I now thing of holding onto God’s promises.
We receive promises personally, as a people, and through our covenantal relationship with a loving Heavenly Father. I often worry about what is coming next or if I can endure with strength and grace. By holding onto God’s promises, I gain a more celestial perspective and grow in faith and trust. It also helps me remember to look for God’s hand in my life.

Here are just a few things prophets and Church leaders have said about the promises of God.
“Though we may feel lost in the midst of our current circumstances, God promises the hope of His light. I know for sure that the promises of the Lord, if perhaps not always swift, are always certain.” – Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf

“The Lord is ready to assist us in our personal efforts and promises remarkable blessings if we endure to the end.”How to Hold Onto God’s Promises
- Learn more about your covenants. Attend the temple, participate in sacred ordinances, and reaffirm your commitment to God’s promises to you and your promises to Him.
- Look for promises in the scriptures. As you study the scriptures, be on the lookout for God’s promises to His people. These promises apply to us today!
- Write down fulfilled promises. How have you seen the hand of God moving in your life? What promises has He already fulfilled? Record these and refer back to them when you need a reminder of His goodness.
